Has anyone read Of Mice and Men?

In Of Mice and Men,why did John Steinbeck choose to end the novel in this manner? Has anyone read Of Mice and Men?
I don't exactly know why John Steinbeck chose the ending he did. All I really know is that the book is great and the ending was very sad for me.

I think one reason it may have ended as it did, is because George knew that Curley and the rest of them were after them on the run, and he just decided they were going to torture Lennie, so George shot Lennie instead and hoped this would be better for him, because George didn't want to see Lennie go through any rough times or more than what he had to, considering his disabilities.

That is all I can think of.

Let me know if you have more questions. :)

-TrentonHas anyone read Of Mice and Men?
He ended the novel like that because he wanted to leave the reader thinking about what would happen if you were in the same situation. Would you rather have your friend be killed mercilessly, or kill your friend yourself while he is day dreaming and happy? It is like a sacrifice to your own emotions if you do what is in the best interest of your friend.
I read it and personally didn't like the ending.

FRIENDS FIRST!!!

Why'd George have to kill Lennie???

WHY????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
