Ok, this is pretty basic, but you could say that Lennie and George's future plans (the romantic) clash with the actuality of their situation (the reality). They don't get that bunny farm like lennie had hoped for, and all their ideas turn to failure in the face of reality (when george feels he has to shoot lennie). Hope that helps. Although there is probably a deeper meaning I'm not hitting on.
